Batawala Places

Welcome to our village of Batawala. I am the new president of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Society.

We live in the Kalutara District, Western Province of the island country of Sri Lanka. Can you find it on the map? Reaching Batawala from Colombo takes about 1½ hours in a good vehicle. You travel through very crowded towns past thousands of school children and hundreds of buses full of people.

The countryside gets more beautiful each kilometre from the city. The main problem we have is transport through this terrain.

When you turn off the paved road, the road to our village is very bad. It is filled with rocks, deep holes and difficult hills to climb. Two vehicles cannot pass each other, and it is almost impossible for a van or lorry (truck) to use this road. During the rainy season it can be like a river.

Walking on the path by the stream. We try to protect the biodiversity of the forest.
Jack fruit can be harvested to eat. You would not want this to fall on your head! It can weigh several kilos!
